The year 2020 was a rough ride and put our lives on a little bit of a pause. However, technical innovation hasn’t stopped at all. In some sectors, technology has advanced ever so significantly.

Developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) of the last year allowed a robotic hand named Dactyl to solve a Rubik’s cube in seconds. The year 2019 also witnessed smartwatches with embedded EKG sensors and incredible progress in machine-based language learning. Likewise, 2020 is full of fantastic novelties – let’s have a look!

Personalized healthcare

The combination of AI, analytic smartwatches, and breakthroughs in genomics will pave the way to custom treatments. Personalized treatments aren’t a new idea, but recent tech developments will finally materialize the concept.

Science has demonstrated that each individual is equipped differently in terms of genetics and ways to combat diseases. Data-driven analytics will help us understand how to personalize medicine for hereditary problems. The ability to administer treatment preemptively is thought to increase the survival rate drastically.

Self-driving cars

Autonomous driving is a popular subject of the past years. This year, however, according to the likes of Elon Musk, is the year we can finally see a “complete” self-driving car.

The year 2020 will be the last step in completing a car that will ultimately drive independently – no more cutting people off, late-breaking, or switching lanes without signaling. Intelligent machines are expected to reduce accidents, traffic jams, and environmental damage.

AI-based services

Progress in artificial intelligence has sky-rocketed in the last year. Companies around the world are preparing to introduce AI as prime service givers for their customers.

Although businesses are using AI for some years now, the innovation consists of introducing an AI-based customer service. Previously, AI was thought to be incompatible with some sectors involving human interaction, but not anymore. Soon we’ll talk with brilliant machines about various services and products.

5G networks

Recent progress in mobile networking will allow us to use 5G networks in no time. Although it’s technically an invention of 2019, the network is currently limited to very few areas. Nonetheless, 2020 is the expected year where we can finally benefit from this lightning speed internet.

These revolutionary networks will have enormous bandwidth and will reach speeds up to 10 gigabits per second. It will act as a general internet service provider for laptops and PCs.

Computer vision

In this case, vision means recognition. Meaning that computers will be able to identify objects and faces much more efficiently. This technology mainly uses camera sensors that scan things, similarly to how your phone gives you access after seeing your face.

Thanks to recent tech developments, applications involving computer visions will make our lives easier and safer. For instance, production lines will identify faulty products, security cameras will deter crime, and face recognition will make the use of keys obsolete.

Quantum Computing

Powerful supercomputers are just around the corner, according to scientists. IBM already offers cloud-based quantum computing services, but the final step is in the making. The race towards this incredible innovation is closing into the last miles.

Extended Reality (XR)

This general term indicates a few emerging technologies used to alter reality. More specifically, it refers to:

  • Virtual reality (VR) creates an immersive experience using a headset that generates a digital world while blending out the real one. This equipment has already been used in video games.

  • Augmented reality (AR) overlays digital images over normal vision via headsets, screens, and similar. Such technology has enormous potential for numerous sectors. For instance, military personnel could benefit from AR in battle or firefighters on a mission.

  • Mixed reality (MR) is an AR where the user can interact with said objects. Uses are also numerous, for example, in schooling or architecture.

Blockchain

The blockchain is like a digital archive in which transactions are recorded. The network is secured through encryption and decentralization. Companies such as bestdissertation.com, IBM, Mastercard, FedEx, and Walmart have invested substantially in blockchain technology. So, get ready because cryptocurrency transactions might come to a supermarket near you!

Not to mention that even Facebook plans on launching its blockchain-based payment system called Diem, alongside a private cryptocurrency. We’ll have to see how other big financial players are going to respond to Facebook’s developments.

The technical innovation of 2020 has provided us with an insight into what the future looks like. The human mind is restless in its journey to perfection. And luckily, we’re along for the ride. In no time, we’ll be able to buy self-driving cars through blockchain and 5G networks – hold on tight!
