Business travel is bouncing back to pre-pandemic levels, but hotel staffing isn’t. According to a new survey conducted by the American Hotel and Lodging Association, 87% of hotels are experiencing a staffing shortage. For 36% of respondents, the shortage is severe. Housekeeping positions are the most likely to go unfilled with 43% of hotels ranking it as their biggest staffing challenge.

The numbers actually represent an improvement. In May, 97% of respondents to similar survey said they were short staffed with 49% calling the shortage severe. Then, 58% ranked housekeeping as their biggest staffing challenge.

Staffing issues aside, properties that showed resilience in the face of recent challenges are being acquired, especially as local governments and customers alike are falling out of love with home share rentals like Air BnB. Somera Capital Management has acquired Dallas-based hotel management company Quorum Hotels & Resorts.

The purchase will provide Somera with a comprehensive management solution and position the company for future growth as it seeks to capitalize on market conditions for both its investors and partners.

“We have well established regard for the culture and talent of Quorum and look forward to continuing the legacy for our associates, partners, and guests alongside a growing portfolio,” said CEO David Brown. “We congratulate the founding partners on their 35 years of success and thank them for the opportunity to work with such a dedicated, dynamic, and talented leadership team in this new chapter.”
