This Week in B2B: Apple payments ruling upheld; Two Years of Reddit Canada; Spoutible opens logo voting;

Apple cannot ban links to outside App Store payments

A Court of Appeal upheld a 2021 antitrust ruling in a case brought by “Fortnite” creator Epic Games. Apple could be required to allow developers to provide third-party in-app payment options and not receive sales commissions. https://www.reuters.com/legal/us-appeals-court-upholds-lower-court-order-forcing-apple-allow-third-party-app-2023-04-24/

Hidden Costs of Chargebacks a Threat to Merchants

Chargeback fraud cost businesses over $20 billion in 2021 and is expected to rise to $117.47 billion by 2023, with 75% of businesses seeing an increase in fraud attempts in 2021. Of the reported chargebacks, 86% are probable cases of friendly fraud, which has seen a significant increase of 41% every two years.

Merchants have limited control once a chargeback process begins. Upon receiving a request for information, merchants have a specific time frame to dispute the request. The better a merchant can explain their terms and conditions, transaction history, and customer contact history, the more likely the appeal will be successful. If unsuccessful, the funds will be taken from the merchant’s account and sent directly to the customer. Chargeback fees can range from $20 to $100 and will be specified by the payment provider.

“End-of-year purchases can cause new-year headaches for many merchants. While many businesses do everything in their power to prevent transaction disputes, many chargebacks—oftentimes fraudulent or invalid—make their way to the retailer,” says Monica Eaton, CEO of Chargebacks911, the first company in the world to specialize in chargeback management. “It’s important to know how to report chargebacks to the IRS to keep your company’s books accurate, as well as best practices to prevent these chargebacks from being filed in the first place.”

Reddit marks two years in Canada

It’s been two years since Reddit opened its doors in Canada. Some highlights of those twenty four months:

  • Since launching its country presence in April 2021, Reddit Canada has grown 15x and now comprises more than 90 local employees spanning Sales, Product and Engineering teams. Canada is now home to the second largest workforce outside of the US and they are still hiring.
  • Canada remains home to Reddit’s third largest audience after the US and UK with geo-relevant communities like r/canada among the most popular for Canadian redditors. With more than 1.7 million community members, growing 42% year-over-year in terms of screen views, the “place to engage on all things Canada” continues to thrive among Canadian users. It leads other local communities like r/personalfinancecanada, r/hockey, r/vancouver, r/ontario and r/ottawa as the most popular among Canadian users (by screen views).
  • Entertainment and sport are among the hottest topics leading the charge in terms of popular interest groups for Canadian redditors. Last year’s AMA with local band Tragically Hip in r/canada was one of the most popular AMAs for Canadians, bringing in nearly 5,000 comments and Upvotes from passionate fans. Sports discussions on hockey and basketball continuously gain eyeballs in r/leafs and r/torontoraptors, with both communities growing in membership at 45% and 17% from the previous year – and not to mention, actor Keanu Reeves gave a shout out to the Toronto Maple Leafs as his favorite NHL team in a recent AMA, which drew in 3,500 Upvotes.
  • Canadian users have also come together to support the causes that matter to them. During the 2022 holiday season, a moderator of r/alberta led efforts to fundraise and partner with local food banks in the area to help families in need. The initiative expanded to 10 Reddit communities across Canada that all took part donating, volunteering, spreading awareness, and urging others to do the same. As a result, over $34,000 CAD was raised by the communities and Reddit matched the donations with an additional $20,000 for the community-led effort.
