QUICK TAKE: Expanding AI Conversational Phenomenology: From Dialogue to Cooperation

When we first began talking about AI conversational phenomenology, we meant something specific: the lived experience of interacting with a probabilistic language model. Why does coherence feel like competence? Why does confidence feel like authority? Why does drift feel like instability? The term captured something important about perception — how users experience AI systems through dialogue.

But that definition is now too narrow.

In enterprise contexts, “conversation” is no longer just exchange. It is control. When a team member prompts an AI assistant, they are not merely chatting, they are delegating and interacting. They are shaping interpretation, invoking tools, updating memory, triggering workflows, and influencing downstream decisions. The control surface remains linguistic, but the consequences are operational. Working with AI is still talking to it, but that conversation now governs infrastructure.

This is why conversational phenomenology must expand. It is no longer only about tone, trust, and anthropomorphism. It includes how users calibrate authority over time, how they detect (or miss) subtle degradation, how error propagates across multi-step exchanges, and how familiarity erodes oversight. The phenomenology of interaction now directly affects risk posture. Miscalibrated trust in a probabilistic system can expand action space just as surely as a technical vulnerability.

Human collaboration norms evolved over centuries. We have shared signals for uncertainty, repair mechanisms for misunderstanding, and institutionalized ways to assign responsibility. With AI, those norms are still emergent. We are adapting human collaboration heuristics to systems that simulate reasoning but do not share human grounding. That mismatch produces predictable friction: over-trust, under-trust, misplaced confidence, and silent drift.

Expanding conversational phenomenology means recognizing that conversation is the governance layer. Dialogue is how we set boundaries, constrain authority, and manage instability. If a system’s instability increases, the response should not begin with intent classification: it should begin with conversational constraint; reduce privilege, shorten horizon length, reset state. In enterprise AI, conversation is no longer soft interface design. It is risk management.

As AI systems become more embedded, the stakes of dialogue rise. The way we speak with these systems, and how we interpret their responses, shapes operational outcomes. Conversational phenomenology, broadened, becomes the study of how humans experience, calibrate, and govern probabilistic systems through language. And in a world where language now mediates action, that is not a philosophical concern. It is an executive one.
