Together, these sectors are reshaping Vietnam’s economy and opening the door to new business models that blend local ingenuity with global demand.
1) Social commerce & e-commerce sellers
Vietnam’s internet economy is surging again, with regional trackers showing SEA GMV rebounding in 2024; Vietnam is one of the growth engines in shopping and online media. Within that, social commerce has exploded — TikTok Shop went from niche to major share alongside Shopee/Lazada, with Vietnam media estimating ~$16B GMV across the big platforms in 2024 and TikTok’s slice climbing fast. For founders, that means creator-led storefronts, live-shopping ops, and micro-brands (beauty, fashion, home) that ride short video and affiliates. 2) Fintech & payments rails (esp. MSME acceptance)
Cashless adoption is now structural, not a fad. SBV officials report 2024–2025 double-digit to 30–40% annual growth in non-cash activity; 2024 YTD data showed >57% y/y surge in cashless transaction volume. For entrepreneurs, the real play is enabling micro-merchant acceptance (QR, POS-lite, “tap to phone”), invoice/BNPL for small shops, and reconciliation tools that plug into Shopee/TikTok payouts. The 90-day e-visa for all nationalities (multiple entry) lowers friction and extends stays — great for slow-travel experiences, boutique homestays, and specialist tours (coffee, crafts, food). 5) Renewable energy & energy-services SMEs
Policy shifts under PDP8 point to more solar and onshore wind, plus a big push for rooftop solar and storage at homes, factories, and malls. That opens doors for EPC micro-firms, rooftop O&M, financing packages for SMEs, and energy-efficiency audits. Founder angle: “solar-as-a-service” on industrial roofs, battery retrofits for factories battling grid curtailment, and software for forecasting/dispatch.
6) Manufacturing linkages & the semiconductor value chain
Vietnam keeps benefiting from supply-chain “friend-shoring.” Apple suppliers grew their Vietnam presence; Foxconn, Luxshare and others continue investing, while power-security hiccups are nudging demand for factory energy solutions. On chips, Hanoi is leaning in with incentives and NIC (National Innovation Center) programs to train tens of thousands of engineers and host EDA tools — creating room for local design-services shops, testing/packaging services, and talent boutiques. Micro founders can sell components, jigs, maintenance and quality services to tier-2/3 suppliers.
7) Coffee, specialty F&B & agrifood value-add
Coffee is a flagship: despite lower volumes, 2024 export value hit a record ~$5.6B on soaring prices, drawing attention to origin branding, specialty roasting, and farm-gate upgrading. Micro enterprises do well with small roasteries, café chains, farm tours, and DTC subscriptions — and with compliance tooling for new rules (e.g., EUDR traceability) to keep EU buyers. Beyond coffee, expect craft chocolate, pepper blends, fruit snacks, and functional drinks to ride the same “value-add at source” wave.
8) Seafood & cold-chain niches
Shrimp, pangasius and high-value seafood exports rebounded through 2024–2025, with industry targets in the $9–10B range across categories. That creates demand for micro cold-chain services, HACCP consulting, and small processing lines that meet export standards. Domestically, direct-to-consumer frozen seafood subscriptions (insulated boxes + QR payments) are growing in big cities.
9) Furniture, wood & handicrafts (craft villages go global)
Wood and wood-product exports hit records in 2024 (~$16–17B), and handicrafts were targeting ~$2B despite headwinds — a boon for SMEs in design, finishing, and small-batch exports. Vietnam’s craft-village ecosystem (ceramics, lacquer, bamboo, rattan, textiles) supports thousands of micro-workshops that now sell via Etsy, TikTok Shop, and B2B wholesale catalogs. Founder opportunities: export compliance and documentation services (origin, sustainability), micro-brand studios that package craft with modern design, and small logistics consolidators for oversized furniture.
10) EVs & e-mobility (esp. two-wheelers + charging)
EV sales accelerated in 2024 (industry sources peg ~90k units across categories), while electric two-wheelers are steadily gaining share and Hanoi is moving to restrict fossil-fuel bikes in the urban core. Local champion VinFast is scaling vehicles and charging via V-Green; the gap for entrepreneurs is neighborhood charging, fleet charging for apartments/offices, battery servicing, and e-bike conversion/repair shops. Delivery-fleet electrification (food-apps, couriers) is another micro-niche with fast payback when paired with QR payments.
What this means for founders (from solo to scale)
- Sell where the eyeballs already are. If you’re a micro-brand, your first “store” is TikTok live + an e-commerce marketplace listing; then layer in your own site once you have repeat customers. Payments and last-mile partners are plug-ins, not projects.
- Be the picks & shovels. Many of the best profits are in the enablers: creator ops, returns handling, mini-fulfillment, payments reconciliation, and compliance (food safety, export origin, EUDR traceability, rooftop permits).
- Follow policy tailwinds. PDP8 renewables, e-visas for 90 days, and chip-talent initiatives are real demand signals. Build services around those timelines (e.g., rooftop O&M bundles; long-stay tourist products; chip-EDA training meetups).
- Mind infrastructure constraints. Power reliability (for factories/data centers), cold-chain gaps (seafood), and returns friction (e-commerce) are pain points customers will pay to solve.
From micro sellers livestreaming on TikTok to manufacturers climbing into the semiconductor supply chain, Vietnam’s entrepreneurial boom is unfolding across every layer of the economy. What ties these sectors together is not just growth, but adaptability: entrepreneurs are seizing policy shifts, digital platforms, and consumer trends faster than their regional peers. For investors, founders, and community builders alike, the message is clear — Vietnam’s growth story is no longer confined to factories and exports. It is local, digital, renewable, and powered by entrepreneurs who see opportunity in every disruption.
