Following years of declining employee engagement, hybrid work transitions, and tighter budgets, organizations are reimagining the role of recognition at work and how it contributes to not only building culture, but driving performance and profitability.
New survey findings from Kudos, in partnership with Sago and TSC, show that recognition is now being treated as a business-critical initiative, measured and optimized like any other key strategy. Ninety percent of managers and HR leaders surveyed say they track recognition outcomes, and nearly 40 percent are now analyzing ROI to link recognition directly to retention, productivity, and profit.
This shift in how organizations approach recognition, and the technology behind it, marks its evolution from a workplace perk to a strategic, measurable, and data-driven performance driver that’s anchored in human connection.
Recognition by the numbers
The survey data confirms why leaders are now putting recognition under an ROI lens.
Among organizations that have implemented recognition platforms, an integrated system that enables leaders and peers to give meaningful recognition, 67 percent report measurable productivity gains, 84 percent report increases in employee engagement, and 40 percent report improved employee retention.
As reflected across industries, when employees feel valued and seen, they are more invested in their work and their teams. For example, since partnering with Kudos, Uvalde Memorial Hospital (UMH) has experienced measurable increases in employee engagement, with engagement scores in the 99th percentile. Employee participation in social events and internal forums (key indicators of connection and culture for UMH) has steadily increased, reinforcing the link between recognition and stronger organizational engagement.
Barriers holding leaders back
While organizations see the value of recognition, many still face barriers to practicing it effectively. According to the survey, 64 percent of HR leaders and managers say budget limits reduce how often they can recognize employees, while 58 percent cite manual administrative burdens that make programs difficult to manage. Nearly half (47 percent) report low manager participation, and 39 percent say they have limited visibility into recognition metrics.
The findings underscore that even when leaders believe in recognition, putting it into daily practice is easier said than done. Many programs remain constrained by outdated tools, manual processes and limited data, making it difficult to scale and connect recognition to measurable outcomes.
As companies embrace data-driven cultures and decision-making, recognition platforms need to evolve in the same direction. AI and automation tools are a great example of next generation platform features. By helping managers craft meaningful messages to the right people in seconds and automating program workflows, AI removes common barriers that once made recognition intimidating and sporadic. It becomes an assistive tool that empowers more human and thoughtful interactions, at scale.
Next generation recognition in action: tips for lasting impact
When recognition is built into everyday operations supported by AI, automation, flexible budgets, and clear metrics, it becomes easier to manage, and more impactful across the organization.
To set recognition strategies up for lasting success, leaders can focus on four imperatives:
● Make it easy: automate recognition workflows and integrate them into existing tools employees already use.
● Empower managers: provide guidance and flexible tools, including budget management options that make recognition sustainable.
● Drive visibility: manage recognition budgets transparently and track engagement across teams.
● Measure what matters: connect recognition to engagement, performance and retention metrics to track results and ROI over time.
Recognition has entered its measurable, business-critical era. For future-oriented organizations, the question is no longer whether to invest in it, but how to make every recognition moment count.
